CV or Resume? Differences by Country

What to include and what to leave out in India, the UK, the US, the Gulf, Canada and Australia.

Terminology

In the UK, India, Australia and much of the Gulf, CV is the common word. In the US and Canada, resume means a one or two page summary, while CV usually means a long academic document. The shape of your document matters more than the name.

By region

  • India: personal details such as date of birth, marital status and a declaration are still common on traditional formats, though many corporate employers now prefer a modern layout without them. Check the employer's style.
  • UK: two pages, no photo, no date of birth, include a short personal statement.
  • US and Canada: one to two pages, no photo, no age, marital status or nationality details, strong focus on results.
  • Gulf (GCC): many employers expect nationality, visa status and notice period, and sometimes a photo.
  • Australia: two to three pages, no photo, include referees or note that they are available.

Privacy and equal opportunity

Where equal-opportunity rules apply, leave out age, gender, marital status and photo unless the employer specifically asks.

Use the Region setting in Settings. It changes the default date format, page size and personal fields shown. You can still toggle every field in the builder.
