How to Structure an Accounting or Finance CV

The section order, length and layout that recruiters in accounting and finance expect.

The short version

A strong finance CV is accurate, scannable and evidence-based. Recruiters spend seconds on a first pass, so the top third of page one has to carry your title, summary, core skills and most relevant result.

  • Header: name, professional title, phone, email, city, LinkedIn.
  • Professional summary: three to four lines with years of experience, specialism, tools and one proof point.
  • Core skills and tools: grouped, not a long list.
  • Experience: reverse chronological, with metrics.
  • Education and professional qualifications: place before experience if you are a fresher or still studying.
  • Certifications, achievements, languages and optional sections.

Length

  • Fresher or up to 3 years: one page.
  • 3 to 12 years: one to two pages.
  • Senior and executive: two pages, three only with strong reasons.

Common mistakes

  • Listing duties instead of results.
  • Inconsistent date formats and tenses.
  • Tiny fonts to squeeze in more content.
  • Skipping software names that recruiters search for.
