How to Write a Cover Letter for Finance Roles

A four-paragraph structure with examples for accountants and analysts.

Purpose

A cover letter explains why you fit this role at this company. It should not repeat your CV line by line.

Structure

  • Opening: the role you are applying for and your strongest relevant credential.
  • Paragraph two: two or three achievements that match the job requirements.
  • Paragraph three: why this company, and what you will contribute.
  • Closing: availability, call to action and thanks.

Length

Half a page to one page, three to four short paragraphs.

Tone

Professional, specific and confident. Avoid clichés such as I am writing to express my keen interest.

Check

  • Hiring manager name where possible.
  • Company name correct everywhere.
  • Match the keywords of the job advert honestly.
