Handling Career Gaps in Your CV

Honest, short and positive ways to explain a break.

Be matter-of-fact

A short, honest line beats a long explanation. Use years instead of months if the gap is short.

Examples

  • Career break: full-time caregiver, [Year] – [Year]. Maintained skills through [course or freelance work].
  • Studying full-time for ACCA or CA exams, [Year] – [Year].
  • Relocation or health recovery, [Year] – [Year], with a returned-to-work summary.

Show readiness

Add updated skills, recent courses and any freelance or volunteer work during the period.

Interview prep

Prepare a calm two-sentence answer: what happened, what you did and why you are ready now.
